Accent marks. The accent marks are three in number. They are used in different ways, according to the syllable on which they can appear and the length of the vowel. • Acute (ά) can be on the last, second-last, or third-last syllable, and on a long or short vowel. Examples: θεός, λόγος, ἀπόστολος, προφήτης, θεοί • Circumflex (ᾶ) can be on the last or second-last syllable, but only on a long vowel. Examples: καλῶς, δοῦλος • Grave (ὰ) can only be on the last syllable, and may be on a long or short vowel.
